Kodiak Island Borough Assembly appoints Scott Arndt as mayor

The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly appointed Scott Arndt as mayor Thursday night. The Assembly received three applications for borough mayor: from current Assembly members Scott Arndt and Joseph Delgado, and former Assembly member Rebecca Skinner.

Community members from all over the archipelago came to the Assembly Chambers or called in to speak on behalf of their preferred candidates. Assembly members wrote their votes on sticky notes and results were tallied by the borough clerk.

Scott Arndt was appointed by a unanimous vote.

Arndt was sworn in after the vote was confirmed and will serve in the position until the next municipal election in October. His new responsibilities include writing the agenda for Assembly meetings and work sessions, however Arndt will lose his vote in the assembly. The borough mayor may only vote in case of a split decision by the Assembly.

Arndt transitioning to borough mayor also means the Assembly will need to appoint someone to his former seat at the table. Borough code requires the Assembly to – once again – open applications to the public and vote on an appointee to serve until the next municipal election.
