Sen. Sullivan criticizes impeachment process as trials get under way

Proceedings are underway this week in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump. On Tuesday, Alaska’s junior senator Dan Sullivan voted with other Republicans to block Democrats’ attempts to subpoena documents for the trial from the White House and State Department.

Sullivan spoke with KMXT last week about his concerns about the impeachment process.

“I believe the Senate is going to do its constitutional duty. We’re going to do this in a fair, sober and civil manner,” he said. “And I think it’s going to be in contrast to what happened in the house where, you know, I think by any measure, we saw, certainly the most rushed the most partisan and unfair impeachment process in history.”

Fair “process” is a common talking point among GOP representatives, who have decried weeks of public hearings and debate in the House as unfair and politically-motivated.

“I think it’s a really important issue that’s going to be front and center, whether impeachment is now going to become a regular tool of partisan warfare that’s trotted out by either side right politically every couple of years.”

A report from the Government Accountability Office, a nonpartisan government watchdog, found that the Trump administration violated the law by withholding Congressional aid to Ukraine.

Trial arguments are slated to begin Wednesday in the Senate. A two-thirds majority is required to convict the president, which would require 20 Republicans to join every Democrat in voting to remove Trump from office.
