Electric charging stations may be coming to the city

The City of Kodiak is in talks with Kodiak Electric Association to add electric vehicle charging stations downtown for Kodiak electric vehicle owners.

These charging stations are part of the city’s new focus on electric vehicles, including replacing its motor fleet with electric vehicles.

At last weekend’s planning session, the City Council discussed purchasing up to three electric vehicles to replace older ones this year, with complete fleet replacement in the coming years.

“We were talking the other day about seeing the school buses change to electric vehicles.”

That’s City Manager Mike Tvenge, who hopes that the city can set an example of a more sustainable, energy renewable Kodiak community to residents.

“This could be another year away, but it’s doable and it’s a responsible goal.”

Electric vehicles could also help the city create a more predictable budget by avoiding fluctuations in fuel prices.
