The search for a new borough manager continues.

That’s after Elke Doom – who was the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly’s pick to fill the vacant manager position – rejected the borough’s proposed contract. Assembly members had unanimously voted to hire Doom at a special meeting earlier this month. When reached for comment at the time, former Borough Mayor Bill Roberts said Doom had accepted the position, although her contract was still in the works.

Assembly members discussed the latest development in the borough manager search during executive session at a special meeting on Thursday, Oct. 27.

During brief public remarks before adjourning, Borough Mayor Aimee Williams indicated that staff would continue reviewing applicants. Other possible next steps include using an executive search firm to expand the current candidate pool, or making an offer to an existing member of the borough’s staff.

Any decision on how to proceed would require an Assembly vote. Williams said the matter will be added to an upcoming Assembly agenda for continued discussion.

Assembly members voted to fire the last borough manager in June after less than a year on the job. They announced four finalists for the position – including Doom – back in September. The borough’s Engineering and Facilities Manager Dave Conrad has been serving as interim manager since the summer.
