Students at North Star Elementary School were evacuated earlier today as a precaution, according to the Kodiak Police Department, due to a “suspicious item left outside the school.” All students are safe, and parents can pick up their kids at the Bayside Fire Department, according to the police.
Parents received calls and emails from the Kodiak Island Borough School District shortly before 11 a.m. notifying them that students were safe and sheltering in place due to a threat. A later call said the students were being taken to the fire department, and to dress warmly for an outdoor pick-up.
Alaska State Troopers is leading the investigation; according to Public Information Officer Tim DeSpain, the troopers’ Kodiak office received a call shortly after 10 a.m. of the item outside the school and secured the area. Alaska Wildlife Troopers and the Kodiak Police Department are assisting with the investigation.
The Kodiak Island Borough School District did not have additional information at this time.
This is a developing story.
