Over $22 million in federal funding is coming to Alaska for waste and recycling infrastructure. That’s according to a joint press release today (Fri, Nov. 17) from Alaska senators Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan.

The money is split between 17 municipal and tribal entities. The Matanuska-Susitna Borough will receive over $3.5 million – the biggest chunk of funds by far. The next highest recipients, including the Aleut Corporation, the Cook Inlet Tribal Council, and the Nelson Island Consortium, will receive about $1.5 million dollars each.

The Kodiak Area Native Association will receive about $1.3 million to assist six village communities to improve efficiency, waste reduction, and recycling programs.

Murkowski said in a statement that nearly every community faces issues with their solid waste disposal and that QUOTE “Trash, and our ability to deal with it – while not a glamorous issue – is critical to everyone.”

Sen. Sullivan shared a similar sentiment in the statement, writing that this was part of the federal delegation’s commitment to preserving Alaska’s wild areas.
