Trident Seafoods will participate in Kodiak’s upcoming Tanner crab fishery, which starts Monday. That’s despite the company announcement last month that it will sell its Kodiak processing plant and that they would operate “a significantly scaled-back winter season.”
At the time of Trident’s announcement, officials would not confirm which marine species the Kodiak facility would buy and process.
This year’s Tanner crab quota is thesecond highest in decades, with manyfishermen already preparing their boats. The guideline harvest level is about 3 million pounds worth of animals this year.
A Trident spokesperson confirmed via email that their Kodiak facility, dubbed “The Star of Kodiak” would participate in the pollock A season as well, which starts Jan. 20.
The spokesperson said the company plans to host a fleet meeting soon and prioritize communications with their fleet. Trident has not confirmed if it will participate in any other Kodiak commercial fisheries, like salmon.
The Kodiak Tanner crab season opens at 12 p.m., on Jan. 15.
