The Coast Guard received a report of an empty blue kayak in the water west of Woody Island on Aug. 26. A helicopter crew from Air Station Kodiak later found an unresponsive man on the beach nearby.

A Good Samaritan vessel was in the area about 20 miles southwest of Kodiak Island and picked up four crew. The Alaska Air National Guard then transported the hypothermic mariner to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage.
