City council to consider edible marijuana and online sales tax during tonight’s regular meeting

The Kodiak City Council will consider allowing the sale of marijuana edibles within the city limits during tonight’s regular council meeting.

The new ordinance is being introduced under New Business, which means there is no specific public hearing tonight. If it is advanced to second reading at the next meeting, a public hearing will be held then.

However, there is a period for public comments near the beginning and end of the meeting if a person wants to show support of opposition of the measure to allow edible pot sales in town.

Materials in the meeting packet say the council wishes to get, and has already received, “substantial” public input before making its decision on whether or not to allow the sale of edibles.

Also tonight, the city continues its effort to collect sales tax on purchases made online. An ordinance up for first reading tonight would adopt the Alaska Remote Sellers Sales Tax Code which is the next step needed to allow the city to collect taxes from residents who purchase online. Like the edible ordinance, the sales tax one must first be advanced to a public hearing before the council can vote it into law.

The city has been working with others around the state to develop one organization to set a standard sales tax so that they can act as one body to collect taxes online. Previously, the mish-mash of different codes and ordinances around Alaska made the collection of online sales taxes unfeasible.

The city is working with the newly formed Alaska Remote Sellers Sales Tax Commission to make online taxes a reality.

Tonight’s city council meeting begins at 7:30 and will be broadcast live on KMXT.

In another local government matter, the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly will get an update tonight on the Pacific Spaceport and plans for launches out at Narrow Cape.

The public is welcome to attend and to let the assembly know of any concerns or support regarding the spaceport.

Tonight’s assembly’s work session is held in the school district conference room and begins at 6:30.

Note: This story was changed to correct Chiniak to Narrow Cape.
