Work from two local artists will soon grace the new Kodiak swimming pool. At last night’s meeting work was approved by the school board. Superintendent Stuart McDonald introduced the pieces, saying he was very pleased to present them.

The work is funded through the state of Alaska’s One Percent for Art program, which requires state-funded projects to set aside one percent of the cost for artwork. Meliah’s work will be purchased for $14,000, and Witteveen’s will cost $25,000. catchyoureyestainedglass2.jpg

There wasn’t much conversation about the art, but board member Peggy Rauwolf was just as pleased as the superintendent about the acquisitions.

Meliah’s stained glass panels will feature wildlife scenes. Witteveen’s work will cover one whole wall with a school of salmon hammered from metal.
