Local group solicits funding applications

A philanthropic organization in Kodiak has more money this year to help fund local nonprofits.

The Kodiak Community Foundation is an affiliate of a larger statewide organization, and this year’s chairman, Craig Johnson, says the group formed five years ago.

They gave away less than $10,000 in the first few years.

Last year, they were able to give away $30,000 with a $25,000 donation through Skoda, a car company which filmed two commercials in Kodiak.

This year, Jonson says, they have $15,000 to donate, and hope to have even more in the future.

“We’re following in the footsteps of communities like Juneau or Seward which have been around longer than us and have raised much more than we have, and they’re able to give away much more than we are. We hope to one day grow up to be like Seward or Juneau.”

The Community Foundation is currently accepting grant applications. Its deadline is 5 p.m. Tuesday.
