Coast Guard medevacs injured hiker off North Sister Mountain

A Kodiak woman got an extra speedy assist from the Coast Guard thanks to a Jayhawk helicopter on a training mission.

An MH-60 helicopter crew from Air Station Kodiak medevaced a 55-year-old woman after she reportedly fractured her leg while hiking North Sister Mountain on Kodiak Island Thursday.

Already airborne on a local training flight, the helicopter was diverted to the mountain at the request of the Kodiak Fire Department.

The woman was hoisted from near the mountain peak and taken to where emergency medical personnel were waiting at the Kodiak Municipal Airport, which is parallels Mill Bay Road near Safeway. (Click HERE for to watch 3 min video of medevac.)

A Coast Guard press release says Sector Anchorage watchstanders received a request for assistance around 7 p.m. from fire department personnel following a report that the hiker was unable to hike the steep terrain back down the mountain.

An on-scene fire department emergency medical technician put the woman’s leg in a splint, as well as helped her with pain management.
