Pool To Get Art, But Not Until Building Is Done

If you’ve driven down Mill Bay Road passed Coon Field anytime recently, you’ve probably noticed the new Kodiak High School pool building being constructed.

While the project is still about a year from completion, the Kodiak Island Borough Board of Education is already talking about how to decorate it once it’s finished.

The board has about 116-thousand dollars to spend on artwork for the pool, but district officials are urging caution when choosing how that money will be spent. In fact, district Operations Manager Scott Williams told the board at last night’s (Monday’s) work session, that a decision should be delayed until the structure is almost done being built.

Board member Norm Wooten likened it to the way art was selected for North Star Elementary, which was built just over a decade ago. At that time the district waited until the building was finished, then had a committee of North Star parents select the art. Wooten suggested that members of a couple local groups should pick the pool art.

Williams said it shouldn’t be a problem to delay selecting the artwork, since the money is earmarked for that purpose.

The pool building is expected to be complete next year, and the district will solicit proposals for artwork once it’s done.
