The Kodiak High School Bears football team remains in the third spot of the Alaska Sports Broadcasters’ Small Schools Poll this week. That despite the bye they had this weekend after a game with Ketchikan fell through before the season started.
The Soldotna Stars remain at the top of the poll with a 4-and-0 record, and the upstart Barrow Whalers are still in second with a perfect 5-and-0 mark.
Behind Kodiak are the Nikiski Bulldogs and Eielson Raves in fourth and fifth. Both have 3-and-2 records.
The Bears get back on the field Saturday afternoon up in Palmer against the Moose. Palmer is unranked in the large school poll, but are tough, having beaten Juneau earlier this season.
With the season now in its second half, each game has play-off implications. There will be an expanded field of eight teams this year, and home field advantage is determined by the team’s record. There’s speculation that if the Whalers continue their winning ways, a play off game could be held, literally, on the frozen tundra of Barrow.
At the top of the large school heap are the South Anchorage Wolverines. They, along with number two North Pole have identical 5-and-0 records. Service is next, followed by Colony, both at 3-and-2, with Dimond in fifth, at 4-and-1.
By the way, what were the Bears doing on Saturday instead of playing? They were hired to plant some trees out in Middle Bay – and put 30-thousand of them in the ground.
