School board members gathered in a classroom at Ouzinkie School Monday to hold the board’s monthly work session. It’s the second time members have met off the road system in the past year. The first was last spring in Old Harbor. (Photo by Casey Kelly/KMXT).

For the second time in a year, the Kodiak Island Borough Board of Education held its monthly work session at a village site. KMXT’s Casey Kelly has more.

(Ouzinkie Song :10s “…[song fades].”)

Students at Ouzinkie School greeted members of the school board and district staff with a song in Alutiiq. ‘Quayana tayluci’ means “thank you for coming.” Students spend about a half hour per week learning Alutiiq via the district’s videoconferencing equipment from Susan Malutin and Teri Schneider in Kodiak. Seanna Gunn teaches middle schoolers at Ouzinkie School and sits in on the language lessons.

(Gunn 1 :22s “…teach me so much also.”)

After the song and introductions, middle schoolers Alisa Chichenoff and Joshua Chernekoff gave a slide show presentation to show off what some of the younger kids have been doing so far this school year.

(Presentation 1 :24s “…they also put on a play.”)

Next up, high school students Rebecca Anderson and Tiffany Panamarioff talked about some of the projects older students have been working on.

(Presentation 2 :31s “…refuge and Kodiak College.”)

Ouzinkie Principal Jake Parrett thanked the board for coming to the village to hold their work session.

(Parrett 1 :14s “…and around our school.”)

All five voting members plus the school board’s non-voting student representative were able to make the trip to Ouzinkie. Superintendent Stuart McDonald and members of the administrative staff were also there in person. Other members of the district staff and school officials from other village sites were able to participate in the meeting via videoconference.

I’m Casey Kelly.
