Stevens Conviction Reversed

Former Senator Ted Stevens conviction on charges of concealing gifts has been reversed. In a Washington D.C. courtroom this morning, Judge Emmett Sullivan called the prosecution misconduct in the Stevens case, "the worst he’d ever seen," and granted a motion to reverse the conviction and drop all charges against the former Senator.

Stevens told Sullivan his faith in the justice system is restored.

Inside the courtroom after the ruling, Stevens and his three daughters hugged, and spoke briefly with former staff members. He left the courthouse arm-in-arm with his family, and paused for a smiling picture. Stevens ignored the waiting microphones, but he did say he had a simple message for Alaskans:

"Tell them all I’m going to enjoy this wonderful day, that’s all."

As he got into a waiting van, Stevens said if he were his colleague Senator Robert Byrd, he would say Hallelujah. The West Virginian Democrat is known for his "halleluiahs" on the Senate floor.
