The Kodiak Island Borough is recruiting for a new borough manager. That was one of the matters staff discussed at the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly work session last Thursday night, when it looked over a final draft of the job description and details of the application requirements. The meeting provided insight into the wording that could attract or repel a potential employee.

For instance, Assemblyman Dan Rohrer made this suggestion about what kind of information the borough should advertise.

“In job summary, it says there is a budget of approximately 36 million [for] a capital improvement program which has run as high as $165,000,000 annually. I would strike the portion after the word program, which has run as high as $165,000,000 annually, because that’s not probably where we’re headed in the future. I don’t think our community can afford that.”

Rohrer said he doesn’t want applicants to get the wrong idea about the position’s primary duties.

“I think you run the possibility of that influencing somebody who’s a very driven project manager-type manager. Someone who really likes doing projects and likes growing infrastructure, and so I think it would be wise or prudent to remove that just so that we don’t accidentally send the wrong message to a potential manager type that that’s their area of expertise.”

He says they are looking for an operations manager, not a capital projects manager.

The assembly made some more clarifications before approving the wording of the application, which the borough is currently using for recruitment.
