Assembly to Take Public Comment on Chicken Ordinance

Borough restrictions on chicken ownership as well as buffer distance for slash piles in Chiniak are once again coming before the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly at its regular meeting tonight, but the assembly will also address a few new subjects.

One of these is the adoption of a list of capital improvement projects for the 2017 state legislative season.

The list of priority projects comes from the Planning and Zoning Commission and the assembly will view their recommendations. Once decided on, and if it’s economically viable, those projects will receive final approval from legislators and eventually may receive state funding. This year, the construction of the M / V Tustemena replacement vessel is at the top of the list.

As for the two topics returning to the assembly’s table, the chicken ordinance will be up for public hearing. That ordinance would put a temporary hold on the restrictions on chickens in certain areas of the borough until the Planning and Zoning Commission can review that code. The second continued issue is a contract amendment to decrease the buffer space between slash piles and residential areas. The suggestion is to change the distance from 500 to 200 feet in order to better facilitate clearing timber.

You can hear more about the timber discussion or speak on the chicken ordinance by attending the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly regular meeting. It’ll be at 6:30 p.m. in the assembly chambers.
