The Kodiak Women’s Resource and Crisis Center has been serving abused women and children on Kodiak Island since 1982. It now has a Spanish speaking advocate to help the immigrant community access its many services. Mary Donaldson has more.

The Kodiak Women’s Resource and Crisis Center has integrated a Spanish speaking outreach coordinator to their staff earlier this year. Rebecca Shields, the executive director of the center says the new advocate offers the same services to the public, just in another language.

(Shields 3 :27s “…and cultural barriers.”)

Serrano says she feels her services are an important part in bridging the gap for the immigrant community.

(Serrano 2 :11s “…receive the help.”)

Serrano also says she is able to help a population that normally does not have access to these kinds of services. She says the people she serves have told her that they appreciate her services.

(Serrano 3 :15s “…this resource in our country.”)

She says the immigrant community can contact her for her services and that she is happy to help.

(Serrano 1 :25s “…gracia.”)

Serrano is available 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 8:30 to 3:30 on Sundays.

The Kodiak Women’s Resource and Crisis Center offers services to women and children island-wide who might be fleeing from domestic violence or sexual assault. The shelter offers 10 beds and two cribs, and has advocates available to respond 24 hours a day. The shelter is located at 422 Hillside.

I’m Mary Donaldson.
