The Adult Basic Education Program at Kodiak College is gearing up to begin its fourth year of offering its English as a second language class. Mary Donaldson has more.
Funded by a grant from the State Department of Labor, the adult English as a second language class offers four different levels of English education, based on the different needs of the community, says Adelia Myrick, the adult basic education coordinator at Kodiak College.

She says the ESL classes are being offered in conjunction with Main Elementary’s KACLAC program, or Kodiak Alaska Community Learning Activities Center, which is an after school program offered to academically at-risk youth. Myrick says by teaming up with KACLAC, they are able to offer free childcare for adults while they attend the class.

Sandy Unruh works with the KACLAC program and says it offers several activities for kids at their centers as well as working in conjunction with the college for the ESL classes.

Myrick says the class is free of charge since it is funded through a grant, and the only expense to the student will be a textbook that they can purchase when they attend. There will also be Spanish speaking teachers available for the students.

Myrick says there is no registration necessary for the class. The adult ESL class begins September 22 at 7:30 p.m. and goes until 8:45 in the evening. They will be held at Main elementary, on Monday and Wednesday nights. The ESL classes are offered during both the fall and spring semesters.
