The Kodiak girls swim team won every race, and 11 of 12 events, at the Region Three Championships over the weekend in Valdez on their way to securing their second straight team title. The Kodiak boys, which had won four of the last five titles, just missed winning another, losing to Wasilla by one point.

The Kodiak girls won all three relays and also had three swimmers win two individual events each. Karen Philpot won the 200-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke, Celeste Beck-Goodell won the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle, and Laura Griffing won the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.

Elyse Johnston won the 50 freestyle and Kyla Young won the 100 butterfly. Wasilla’s Rachel Kennedy was the lone swimmer from another school to win a girls event, taking the diving competition.

Nando Macinko was the Kodiak boys’ only individual winner, taking the 100 backstroke. The Bears also won the 200 freestyle relay.

The state championships will be this weekend at Bartlett High School in Anchorage.
