City Council Okays Nonprofit Payments

The Kodiak City Council passed a resolution Thursday approving the city’s annual payments and in-kind contributions to area nonprofit organizations.

Council members had high praise for more than 20 nonprofits that will share about 600-thousand dollars in cash and 120-thousand dollars worth of in-kind services. Councilman Jack Maker said it was a shame the amount couldn’t be higher.

The largest cash donation made by the city was 200-thousand dollars to the Kodiak Historical Society for building improvements at the Baranov Museum, which the city owns. Other significant amounts include 91-thousand dollars for the Kodiak Human Society for operation of the animal shelter, 85-thousand to the Kodiak Island Convention and Visitors Bureau, and 43-thousand for the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce.

Maker added that the council will discuss the city’s guidelines for nonprofit payments at a yet to be scheduled planning meeting.

Councilman Tom Walters said the process has been better since the guidelines were established.

Full disclosure: Kodiak Public Broadcasting once again received 10-thousand dollars in cash and an in-kind contribution of 690 dollars from the city this year.
