KMXT 100.1 FM Public Radio in Kodiak, Alaska
A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck 45 miles Northeast of Kodiak City this morning. However, the Alaska Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer says the quake, which occurred at 5:17 a.m. was not strong enough to generate a tsunami.
Guy Urban is a scientist and senior watch stander with the warning center. He said the quake was moderate and not enough to cause great concern.
Urban says earthquakes and after shocks are difficult to predict, but he said there are several precautions that should be taken for people living near water when a stronger earthquake occurs.
Urban is grateful to all those who called the warning center with information. He encourages anyone to call when they believe they’ve felt an earthquake.
According to the Alaska Tsunami Warning Center, the location and magnitude of the earthquake are based on preliminary information. Further information will be issued by the United States Geological Survey later in the day and can be viewed on USGS Web site.
