The third week of September is National Adult Day Services Week. During this week, focus is on the nation’s 4,000 day-time activity programs for seniors. Kodiak’s adult day services fall under the auspices of Senior Citizens of Kodiak Incorporated. "Island Cove" is considered a model senior day program and is one of only a few that’s accredited by the National Council on Aging. To achieve that status, it had to meet standards in several areas.
The program has grown to its current standing from its humble beginnings in 1991 at Bay View Terrace.
Marita Kaplan is the program’s director.

The program incorporates adult appropriate activities with consideration for people with specific needs such as exercise for seniors in wheel chairs or special activities for those with memory problems. Kaplan says that adult day program at Island Cove shouldn’t be confused with the other kind of day care.

There are events planned to recognize National Adult Day Services Week in Kodiak including an art show that opened on Monday.

A by-invitation-only breakfast at Island Cove is scheduled for Saturday.
National Adult Day Services Week was created in 1983 through a proclamation by then president Ronald Reagan.
