School started in Kodiak Monday morning, and at that night’s Kodiak Island Borough Board of Education meeting, Superintendant of Schools Steward McDonald had an update on the lack of a crossing guard program.

He informed the board that there were no respondents to the City of Kodiak’s request for proposals to coordinate crossing guards this year. The Salvation Army had operated the program, but declined to continue this school year.

McDonald said there may be another solution in the future:

(Crossing 1 26 sec "We do have some other … see where it leads.")

McDonald said one long-time volunteer crossing guard did show up on Monday morning, despite the lack of an official program:

(Crossing 2 24 sec "I want to take my hat off … appreciate him for that work.")

This is the 11th year that Roberts has been a volunteer crossing guard.
