Hearing Set Over Trash Controversy

Residents will have another chance to weigh in over whether to eliminate Dumpsters in the Mission District and expand curbside trash pickup.

A Kodiak Island Borough work session sparked lively debate between those who support the idea of eliminating 13 dumpster sites and those opposed to the idea. Dumpsters would be replaced by individual wheel carts. More than 650 households would be affected by the change.

While the borough is empowered to expand curbside service without taking a vote, the high level of public interest has led the Assembly to open a public hearing before putting the plan to a vote, said assistant clerk Jessica Kilborn.

The hearing is set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 17 at the borough’s regular meeting. The proceedings will be carried live on KMXT.
