What has been called the very best cruise ship in the world will kick off Kodiak’s summer tourism season on Tuesday. The Crystal Serenity is the flagship of Crystal Cruise Lines, which has been voted best cruise line in the world the past 16 years by readers of "Conde’ Nast Traveler" and "Travel-and-Leisure" magazines. The 800-foot ship is expected in port at 8 Tuesday morning and depart at 5 p.m. It has a capacity of over 1,000 passengers.

The Crystal Serenity is the first of 14 scheduled cruise ship calls on Kodiak between now and mid September. The majority of visits will be by the Holland America Lines’ ship "Amsterdam," which has eight visits scheduled. The Holland America ship Zaandam will call next at the end of the month. Silver Seas’ vessel "Silver Shadow" is scheduled here twice, and two other ships will visit once each, the Hanseatic and the World Residence at Sea. All the ships will dock at Pier 2.

The potential number of cruise ship visitors coming to Kodiak could be over 13,000.

We’ve got the schedule for the cruise ship season after the jump.
