A supplier to Kodiak Electric Association announced yesterday that it will sell a battery back up system to the co-op as part of this summer’s expansion of the Pillar Mountain wind farm.

Xtreme Power of Kyle, Texas, said in a release that the "Dynamic Power Resource" battery and control equipment is designed to smooth out power delivery by absorbing electricity from the wind turbines when demand is low, and releasing it out into the grid when the winds are slack.

Kodiak Electric President Darron Scott says the addition of three more turbines to the wind farm overlooking downtown is just waiting for access to the top of the mountain.

The Dynamic Power Resource system will be placed on Pillar Mountain and is scheduled to be completed before the end of the year. Xtreme Power did not say how much the battery system will cost.

The Pillar Mountain wind farm currently has a capacity of 4.5-megawatts overall. It currently provides 10 percent of Kodiak’s electrical demand. The three new turbines will have the same capacity as the original three, boosting total output to 9-megawats.
