Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski took the opportunity during a Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee hearing yesterday to express her condolences to U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Robert Papp over the deaths of two men last month at the ComSta (com-stay) here in Kodiak.

"I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the very difficult situation the men and women in Kodiak are facing currently. We had a double homicide on the Kodiak Base, which is as yet unresolved. And in a small island community like Kodiak it is, I think quite nerve-wracking for the families concerned about their security. I know that the federal agencies are working hard with the great help of the Coast Guard to try to resolve this. But when we talk about the health and safety, I think we are always concerned when there is something of this nature. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those who that are working so hard to resolve this."

Forty-one-year-old Petty Officer 1st Class James Hopkins and 51-year-old retired Chief Petty Officer Richard Belisle, were found shot to death April 12th.

No arrests have been made in connection to the killings.
