City-Borough Land-Swap on Council Agenda

A proposed land swap between the city and the borough would accomplish several things. First the Kodiak Island Borough would get a good building site near the hospital on which to build the new long-term care facility. Second, the City of Kodiak would get much needed land at the east end of the cemetery, which would provide better access near the entry of the cemetery.

The land swap is one of the many items on tonight’s regular Kodiak City Council meeting agenda. The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly approved the exchange during its regular meeting last week.

While the borough assembly needed only to pass a resolution on the matter, the city council must approve an ordinance to allow the land swap. That means, that the council will be considering the measure in first reading tonight, and if it is approved, will revisit it at a future meeting which will include a public hearing on the proposal.

Other items on the city council agenda include accepting state grants for the Baranof Park improvements and the Pier III replacement project, changes to both the library and the Baranof Park projects, and a contract with the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce for economic development services.

The city council meets at 7:30 in the Borough Assembly Chambers and will be broadcast live on KMXT.
