Grand Opening for Refurbished Track and Turf Tomorrow

While the City of Kodiak is thinking about a dedication ceremony for the newly refurbished Joe Floyd Track and Field at a future date, Kodiak High School athletes intend to make a big deal about its first day of official use tomorrow.
Starting at 1 p.m. the high school choir will sing the National Anthem, followed by a Coast Guard fly over. Youngsters from the Kodiak Football League will get introduced, as well as the running team – even though it’s cross-country and not track season yet.
Next, Coach Marcus Dunbar says that all the runners from both Kodiak and visiting Grace Christian, will run what he’s calling the “Grand Opening Mile.” The girls will start at 1:50 p.m., with the boys starting one minute later, so everyone will be on the track at the same time.
At 2 p.m. in the homecoming game, the Kodiak High School Bears will face off against its long-time arch rivals, the Soldotna Stars, who have thwarted the Bears’ state championship dreams for many years. Kodiak is 2-and-0 in the Northern Lights Conference, while Soldotna is 3-0.

By the way, the reason the Grace Christian runners are in town is a cross country meet this afternoon at Fort Abercrombie. The Grizzlies are a 3-A powerhouse, and have defeated several larger schools this season. The clash between Kodiak Bears and mainland Grizzlies starts at 5 p.m. for the girls and at 5:45 for the boys. Middle school races will be at 4 and 4:30 p.m.
