Search Suspended for FV Flying Ocean Fisherman

Jay Barrett/KMXT
Last night the Coast Guard suspended its search for a missing fisherman 30 miles northwest of Sitkinak Island. The as-yet unidentified crewman reportedly went overboard just before 11 a.m. yesterday while setting gear from the Kodiak-based fishing vessel Flying Ocean.
Two Air Station Kodiak Jayhawk helicopters, an HC-130 Hercules and the crew of the Cutter Hickory participated in the search.
During the search, a Jayhawk helicopter crew experienced an in-flight emergency and was forced to land on the beach. The helicopter crewmen were taken aboard the Hickory for the night by the cutter’s small boat.
The Coast Guard plans to investigate the cause of the mechanical failure today and will develop a recovery plan once the investigation concludes.
