June is Filipino American Heritage Month in Kodiak. During last night’s city council meeting Councilman Rich Walker read a proclamation recognizing the vital role Filipino Americans play in Kodiak’s community. Mary Guiles Hawver is the president of the Filipino American Association and accepted the proclamation.
“On behalf of the entire Filipino American community I would like to thank you for your continued support in proclaiming June 2013 Filipino American Heritage month in celebration , of course, of our 115 anniversary of Philippine Independence Day.”
Hawver said the Filipino American Association will host a community celebration this Saturday.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to invite all of you to a community picnic potluck on Saturday, June 15, from noon to 5 p.m. at the East Addition Park. Please join us in our celebration. If it rains, please proceed to the Teen Center. Again, thank you.”
Independence Day in the Philippines was on June 12. The day commemorates the Philippine Declaration of Independence from Spain in 1898.
