Good Weekend for KHS Bears Athletics

Jay Barrett/KMXT
It was another successful sports weekend for Kodiak High School athletes.
Cross Country
Levi Thomet and the boys cross country team won the Region III title again. It’s the 12th time in a row for the team, the second in a row for Thomet, and the eighth consecutive individual title for a Kodiak runner. The regionals were held on Saturday in Seward, with the Kodiak boys scoring 42 points to beat Colony, Kenai, Wasilla and Palmer. Thomet’s time was 16 minutes 7-seconds. He and the boys squad have qualified for the state championship in Anchorage this weekend. Zoe Bigley, who placed 14th in the girls race, also qualified for state.
Swimming
Also on the Kenai Peninsula, the Kodiak swimmers had a near-hegemony at the So-Hi Pentathlon in Soldotna. A pentathlon includes five races each swimmer competes in, with the winner decided by the lowest aggregate time. Tahna Lindquist and Ila Hughes finished one-two, with just 12-one-hundreths of a second separating the two. The Kodiak girls took the team title as well, with a score of 47, beating host Soldotna’s 41. Palmer, Seward and Colony rounded out the top five.
The Kodiak boys easily won their title, with 69 points to Soldotna’s 39, but Colony’s Alex Kessler edged out Kodiak’s swimmers to take the individual title. Dyton Schauff, in second place, was the top Bear, just three seconds off the pace, with Nicholas Lincoln in third, two seconds behind. Blake James was fifth, just two more seconds behind.
Football
On the gridiron, the Bears secured a spot in the playoffs with a 37-to-7 conference win over Houston. Skyview will be in town this week to finish up the regular season.
Volleyball
At the West Spiketacular volleyball tournament, the Bears lost the rubber game in the final match against two-time defending state champion Dimond to take second place. Kodiak played 20 matches over two days, and took the Lynx to three games in the finale. The Bears won the first game 25-20, but fell 17-25 and 15-17 in the last two. Twenty other teams from all over Alaska competed.
The next contest for the Bears is here at home against the Colony Knights Friday and Saturday.

We have individual results from running and swimming after the jump.
