Undefeated Kodiak Girls Breeze Through State Championships

The Kodiak High School girls basketball team capped off a perfect season Saturday evening by winning the Alaska Large School State Championships. The Kodiak Bears beat the Colony Knights 65-41 in the final game, to finish the year 27-and-0.
The last time Kodiak High School had a state basketball championship was 2001, when the boys played an undefeated season. The coach both times was Amy Fogle, the only coach in Alaska history to pull off both feats.
During the tournament, at Sullivan Sports Arena in Anchorage, Kodiak outscored their three opponents by a combined 75 points. The only time any of the games were close was at the end of the first quarter in the championship game, when Kodiak led Colony by only three points. They wound up winning by 25. In game two against the West Valley Wolf Pack, the Bears were so far ahead, they only scored one point in the final period and still won by 36.
It wasn’t just the explosive offense that fueled Kodiak’s tournament – defensively, Kodiak allowed West Valley only one field goal and five points in the first half of their game.
In the final game, all five of Kodiak’s starters scored in double-digits, an unheard of feat at any level of basketball. Guard Carissa Cannon led all scorers with 21 points, as well as hauling down five rebounds, dishing out four assists and committing five steals.
Adriane Horn had 12 points, including two from three-point range, Jerrica Nelson and Megan Pyles had 11 each, and Hannah Wandersee scored 10.

Also at the Sullivan, Kodiak High School took second place in the cheerleading competition, which was held between games.
