Kodiak’s cruise ship season is finally underway. The Silver Shadow pulled up to the city dock this morning. The ship, operated by Silver Seas, is the first to call on Alaska’s Emerald Island this year. Last month the Holland American Line ship Volendam decided to bypass Kodiak on account of bad weather in the Gulf of Alaska.
But poor weather was no concern today, and the Silver Shadow’s 382 passengers and crew members will be able to soak up the sun and sights until the ship departs at 6 p.m.
Discover Kodiak Director Chastity Starrett said the ship is actually relatively small compared to the other eight ships that are scheduled to visit the island over the next few months. She said most of them will average about 1,400 passengers.
The next ship is due in the day after the Kodiak Crab Festival wraps up – May 27.
