A group of classic car buffs have been visiting Kodiak this week in their historic vehicles.

Jim Fredenhagen from Anchorage is among them. He owns a blue 1929 Model A Ford, which he explains has a very special horn.

“Believe it or not, moose hate that horn. They take off when they hear that horn,” said Fredenhagen.

The 20 vehicles range from those made in 1929, like Fredenhagen’s, to a 1964 Pontiac GTO.

Fredenhagen is traveling with a group of 47 people who are members of two car clubs: the Antique Auto Mushers of Alaska, based in Anchorage, and the Vernon Nash Antique Auto Club, from Fairbanks.

Each year, the clubs plan a trip together and, this year, they chose Kodiak.

“We’ve been as far north as Prudhoe Bay,” says Fredenhagen.  “We’ve been to Juneau and last year we went to McCarthy. We haven’t done Kodiak in about eight years.”

The group has visited sites like the rocket launch, Pasagshak, and the coast guard base, among others, says Fredenhagen. The group attracts a lot of attention when they travel, he says. People often stop to say hello, and they welcome that.

“We are at the Shelikof Lodge here in Kodiak, and we’ve been here for two days, and we have one more day,” Fredenhagen. “All of our cars are parked out front for a quasi car show and the public is totally welcome to come by and spend as long as they’d like to look at the cars and ask us any questions.”

They plan to tour Coast Guard Base Kodiak and catch the ferry back to Homer tonight.
