Borough Assembly takes up non-profit funding at tonight’s meeting

In addition to non-profit funding, the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly will introduce a proposed ordinance to allow accessory buildings and accessory dwellings. It’s hoped the small units will help ease the local housing crunch.

Also on agenda is changes to fees, a number of contracts, and filling vacant seats on borough advisory committees.

A list of proposed funding amounts for non-profits is below this article.

The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly has a full agenda for this evening’s regular meeting which includes non-profit funding and the first reading for the proposed ordinance to allow accessory buildings and dwelling units.

With money being tight all around, local non-profits are vying for much needed borough support. According to the meeting packet, $157,500 would be distributed among 14 non-profits. An additional $12,000 would be divided equally between three local museums using Tourism Funded Grants.

If approved as proposed, Essential Community Services would get the bulk of the funds. The Brother Francis Shelter, Kodiak Women’s Resource and Crisis Center, the Salvation Army, and Senior Citizens of Kodiak would share $124,500.

A number of other non-profits would get $3,100, one would get $4,500 and KMXT would be awarded $3,700.

The ordinance to approve accessory buildings and accessory dwelling units will be introduced this evening. The small dwellings, which are popular in the Pacific Northwest, can be an effective way to add affordable housing to existing neighborhoods. It is hoped that they will help to ease the local housing crunch.

Opponents to the small dwelling units have said it will cause congestion, parking problems, and crowded residential areas by allowing multi-family housing in single family neighborhoods.

The assembly will also consider changing borough fees, as well as two funding requests from the Salmon Work Group.

A number of contracts are being looked at tonight, as is the filling of vacant seats on several borough advisory boards.

There are no public hearings schedule for tonight, but the public can comment for up to three minutes near the beginning and end of the meeting.

The meeting begins at 6:30 in the Borough Assembly Chambers. KMXT will broadcast it live.
