The Kodiak High School Bears swept the weekend’s events against Palmer and Port Lions on a Baranof Park track that had just recently been cleared of up to a foot of ice and snow.

The Kodiak girls won with 34 points Friday, to Palmer’s 29 and Port Lion’s 18. Saturday, it was Kodiak on top with 34 points, followed by 29 from Palmer and 8 for Portlions.

The Kodiak boys won 45-19 on Friday against just Palmer, who scored 19. On Saturday, it was 30-25 in Kodiak’s favor.

Coach Marcus Dunbar pointed out that competitors produced eight marks that are the best in the state to this point in the track and field season. An impressive 33 marks were set that would rank in the top six, statewide.

He said the high marks this early in the season, including many personal bests for the athletes, will give the team tough marks to shoot for in future meets.

Dunbar is claiming – perhaps in a tongue-in-cheek manner – two world records at the meet. They came in the first ever, and as yet un-sanctioned, Water Long Jump. Because of snow on the field at the Joe Floyd Track and Field, the long jump was held in the Kodiak swimming pool, where athletes got a running start and landed in the water. Emma Nelson, Daniel Adams and Michael Manifo won or tied in the event.
