Deals with Chamber, KICVB and Threshold Renewed

At last night’s Kodiak Island Borough Assembly meeting, several contracts were approved with local non-profits that provide services to the borough.

The contracts with the Kodiak Island Convention and Visitors Bureau, Kodiak Chamber of Commerce and Threshold Services were all approved unanimously.

Mayor Jerome Selby explained the value of the economic development services the chamber provides.

Lale Gurer, the economic development specialist at the chamber thanked the assembly for its action:

Acting Borough Manager Bud Cassidy pointed out that at $43,000 the chamber contract is actually $2,000 less than last year’s. The contract with the KICVB is for $65,000, and is funded out of the borough’s bed tax.

Before the vote on the contract with Threshold Services, Solid Waste Advisory Committee Chairman Nick Szabo addressed the assembly about the "Three-Rs" of sustainability:

He asked the mayor if there could be a discussion about the re-use station with the new borough manager and the new environmental specialist once they are settled in. Mike Patterson has been hired as the solid waste manager and environmental specialist. The assembly is still looking for a new borough manager.

Assemblyman Mel Stephens suggested getting feedback from others who have implemented re-use stations:

The contract with Threshold is for $210,000 during the next fiscal year, though the borough will share in the income from the sale of valuable recyclables. It will be for 10 percent this year and 15 percent for each year the contract is extended.
