The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly will hold a regular meeting tonight and work toward a finalized priority list of capitol projects to submit during the 2013 legislative session. The assembly has been discussing the list during many work sessions and has listed landfill expansion, pier III replacement and Anton Larsen Bay Road extensions as key projects, among many others.
Also on the agenda is the passing of a joint resolution between the borough assembly and the Kodiak City Council. During a joint work session on September 4, the assembly and council agreed to pass a joint resolution and send Borough Mayor Jerome Selby and City Mayor Pat Branson to present it during the North Pacific Fishery Management Council meeting in October. The fishery council will be looking at bycatch issues associated with the Pacific cod and polluck trawling fishery, and the Kodiak Fisheries Work Group, comprised of three members from both the assembly and the council, has met at length to draft considerations on fishery management issues as they pertain to the Kodiak region. Both the assembly and city council will vote to approve the statement, which will be presented during the October meeting of the fishery council.
The borough assembly will also take a closer look at benefits for borough employees during the meeting, specifically longevity pay benefits for long-time borough employees and compensation for unused sick days. Neither is currently offered to borough employees and the assembly will vote to adopt the ordinance so a public hearing can be held on both items at the next regular meeting.
