Coast Guard Clearing Trees Too Near Runway

More trees are coming down in Kodiak. The stands of trees around the Kodiak State Airport in Lower Government Housing on Coast Guard land will get chopped down starting sometime this month. That word from Lieutenant Commander Mark Nelson, the branch chief of Base Engineering and Maintenance.
He said the removal is in the interest of safety to meet Federal Aviation Administration runway clearance regulations. The trees in question are west of runway 36 and its parallel taxiway, in the vicinity of the control tower east of Albatross Avenue.

Due to concerns with underground utilities, Nelson said the trees will be cut close to the ground this month and the stumps removed at a later date.
