Borough Filing Deadline is Today

Today (Thursday) is the last day for candidates interested in running for Kodiak Island Borough public offices. As of closing time yesterday, there is now one race that is contested out of 14 available.
With the addition of Dennis Symmons to the assembly race, there are now three people seeking the two available seats. Symmons joins Frank Peterson Junior and Carol Austerman on the ballot. The top two vote-getters will be seated.
Every other office either has no candidates, or just one.
So far Jerrol Friend, whose campaign signs started to show up all over town this week, is the only candidate for borough mayor.
Rick Kniaziowski is the lone candidate for the three-year school board seat, while Todd Hailey is the only person so far running for the one-year seat on the school board.
Jim Pickett is running unopposed for the one seat on the Fire Protection Number 1 Board, Darlene Turner is alone in running for the Monashka Bay Road Service Area Board, where two seats are available; and Dennis Symmons, who as we mentioned is running for assembly, is also seeking a seat on the Service Area Number 1 Board.
The Bay View Road Service Area has no candidates for its two open seats, and the same is true for the Womens Bay Service Area Board.
The deadline for filing paperwork to run for borough office is 4:30 this afternoon at the Borough Clerk’s office.
