The Simply Awesome Bakery storefront is closing at the end of the week. Owner Sam Stahlhut, who has been running the bakery with help from his brother Ben and mother Karin, says recent developments would make it a challenge to maintain a full-time business.

His mother is going through some issues with her health, and soon, Ben will be shifting all his focus to his education. That would leave Sam to fill the roles of owner, chef, and cashier.

“I’m very happy we’re getting so much demand, but my brother is going to college soon, and that will leave us a bit short staffed. So, yeah, just one person we’ve already discovered is not enough for a bakery.”

He says they’re also moving houses, which means they’d no longer have a storefront. The Stahlhuts had been running the business out of their home on Mill Bay Road above radio station KVOK since they opened in November. During that time, the community has embraced the bakery – to a degree which Sam says surprised him.

“The thing that I’m most proud of is just getting started, really. All the different products I was getting to try making and everything, and the sheer volume of orders and customers. It was lot more than I expected, and that is something I am very prideful on.”

Some of the Stahlhut specialties include cinnamon rolls, banana bread, and donuts. None of which will disappear.

Locals can still buy their baked goods regularly at Kodiak’s farmer’s markets, which happen in Sutliff’s parking lot on Wednesday nights and the fairgrounds on Saturday mornings.
