Teen Fisherman Injured, Airlifted

A 19-year-old fisherman was medevac’d to Kodiak Thursday morning after being hit in the face by a rope that snapped.

The Coast Guard says Daniel Cornelius suffered severe facial injuries when he was struck by a parting line onboard the fishing vessel Kittiwake. A nearby vessel, the Karen Kay, contacted the Coast Guard by VHF radio at 7:23 a.m. to report the injury.

Meanwhile, the crew of the 38-foot Kittiwake diverted the vessel to Ouzinkie where Cornelius was treated at the village medical clinic and prepared for the helicopter pickup.

An Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew flew to Ouzinkie, arriving at 10:45 a.m., and picked up Cornelius for the short flight to Kodiak. The helo was met by an ambulance 15 minutes later when it touched ground at the air station.

The Kodiak Emergency Medical Services crew transported Cornelius to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center for further treatment. The Coast Guard Base Fire Department assisted in the transport.
