Wind Blacks Out Several Areas Overnight

High winds gusting to 60 mph and more knocked electricity out for three large neighborhoods overnight. The Chiniak, Mill Bay and Monashka Bay areas lost power shortly after 2 a.m.

The Kodiak Police Department issued an alert around 3 a.m. warning of multiple toppled trees and other debris in roadways. Some of that debris came from tipped garbage roll carts set out for collection.

Fallen trees blocked the driveway into Kodiak College off of Benny Benson Drive, forcing staff and students to use a single-lane back road off of Woody Way Loop.

The highest official wind gust recorded overnight at the National Weather Service office at the Kodiak Airport came from the south at 2:40 a.m. at 57 mph. Winds were likely higher through channeled terrain.

As of noon there has been no official announcement from Kodiak Electric Association as to the cause and extent of the power outage.
